About Mr. Phillips
Greetings! My name is Matt Phillips and I am a native of Oakwood and an alumnus of West Hall. I received a degree in Speech Communication (A.B.S.C.) with concentrations in political communication and public policy from the University of Georgia. While in Athens, I was a member of the National Association of Communication Scholars. I was also a member and student-leader in the UGA Redcoat Marching Band. During my junior year at UGA, I had the opportunity to travel as part of a study abroad venture throughout the People’s Republic of China. During my senior year at Georgia, I was selected by the Southern States Communication Association as a finalist for the Theodore Clevenger Undergraduate Research Honor for my work in political communication. Over the years, I have worked in a variety of capacities at numerous camps and other activities for students of all ages before becoming a teacher. Today, my passion is helping young people learn the value of learning. During my time back at West Hall, I have worked as a paraprofessional, co-teacher, and currently as an Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate teacher. I have completed a master’s degree in History Education from Piedmont College and an Ed.S. from Kennesaw State. The fantastic faculty of WHHS voted me as the Teacher of the Year in 2014 and I was honored to be selected as the Hall County System Teacher of the Year for 2015-2016. The faculty and admissions officers of Yale University in New Haven, CT selected me as the recipient of the 2019 Yale Educator Award.
I'm proud to be back in my hometown with my lovely wife and our fantastic children! Go Spartans!
